Description
Alms Bowl Buddha: Arms are bent at the elbows, he holds an alms bowl at chest level. This statue represents compassion and care for all beings. Contrary to what many think, the monks (and the Buddha) did NOT beg for food. Instead, they collected alms. The difference is that collecting alms enables the giver to earn merit (i.e., gain good karma). Devout Buddhists in Asia prepare food at their alms rounds in the morning and give it to the monks. The Buddha depicted here is holding a vessel in his hands, the hand posture of a Buddha is also called a mudra. The Buddha belongs to the homeless wanderers who live on alms. Therefore, the Buddhist monks use the term beggar. So they could be seen every morning at the alms round. This beautiful specimen is also unique, hand carved from solid stone. Frost and weather resistant.
